🧾 Ingredients

You only need a few simple ingredients to make this perfect easy appetizer. These little bites of finger food are perfect for special occasions like a dinner party, bridal showers, or holiday gatherings like Christmas dinner or Easter.

ingredients to make smoked salmon appetizer bites.
  • Smoked Salmon - Thin slices of cold-smoked salmon are key for their rich, smoky flavor. Use good quality smoked salmon for the best flavor.
  • Cream Cheese - Adds a creamy texture. Use Garlic & Herb Cream Cheese or season the cream cheese spread yourself with herbs or spices for extra flavor, like garlic powder and chives. You can also keep the creamy spread plain to focus only on the smoked salmon flavor.
  • Lemon - Fresh lemon zest will enhance the flavor of the salmon and give a zing on every bite.
  • Chives - Fresh chives can be a delicious topping for these smoked salmon canapes, giving a faint onion flavor. You can also use fresh parsley.
  • White Bread - White bread is the perfect soft base for the appetizer bites. If you prefer a crunchy base, you can use round saltine crackers or for something in the middle, you can use the classic Blinis.

🍳 Substitutions

Here's a list of substitutions for the ingredients typically used in smoked salmon bites, offering flexibility based on dietary preferences or availability:

  • Smoked Salmon: Smoked trout, smoked tuna, and other smoked sliced fish can be used for a different flavor profile.
  • Cream Cheese: For a dairy-free option, use cashew cream or any plant-based cream cheese. Goat cheese or sour cream are also creamy alternatives with a tangy flavor.
  • Lemon: Lime zest can work as a substitute, providing a similar citrusy zing to enhance the other flavors.
  • Chives: Parsley, chervil, or fresh dill can be used in place of chives to give an extra herby aroma to the bites.
  • White Bread: Sliced baguette to make salmon crostini, crackers or blinis are valid alternatives. Cucumber slices can be used as a gluten-free option for those avoiding bread.

🥣 Variations

To keep your smoked salmon appetizer bites exciting and varied, consider these creative variations:

  • Herbed Cream Cheese: Mix different herbs such as chives, parsley, or basil into the cream cheese for a fresh, herbaceous flavor that complements the smoked salmon.
  • Avocado Spread: Replace cream cheese with a smooth avocado spread seasoned with lime juice and salt for a creamy, rich alternative. Check out also this Avocado and Smoked Salmon Tartare.
  • Bagel-Inspired Bites: Use mini bagel slices as the base and add a touch of everything bagel seasoning on top of the salmon for a New York bagel twist.
  • Cucumber Roll-Ups: Instead of crackers, use thin cucumber slices as the base to make salmon cucumber bites. Spread cream cheese on the cucumber, place a small piece of salmon, roll it up, and secure it with a toothpick.
  • Mediterranean Style: Top the easy salmon appetizer with a mix of cream cheese and finely chopped sun-dried tomatoes, olives, and a sprinkle of oregano.
  • Caprese Twist: Place a small slice of fresh mozzarella and tomato on the salmon, then drizzle with balsamic glaze and garnish with basil for an Italian-inspired variation.
