Thanks to the air fryer, you get perfectly browned meatballs with less mess and less fat than pan-frying. Made with a simple blend of ground meat, breadcrumbs, cheese, and herbs, they're a comforting classic you'll want to make again and again. Serve them with marinara, with mushroom gravy, in subs, or enjoy them on their own with a dipping sauce!

🍳 Substitutions

  • Ground meat → Use ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option. Or mix beef with pork or veal for a classic Italian meatball blend.
  • Cheese → Pecorino Romano or even Grana Padano can be used instead of Parmigiano.
  • Breadcrumbs → Use panko for a lighter texture or gluten-free breadcrumbs if needed.
  • Herbs → Swap parsley with basil or oregano, or add Italian seasoning for convenience.
  • Garlic → Garlic powder works if you're out of fresh garlic-use ½ tsp.
  • Egg → Check this post on Best Egg Substitutes for Meatballs and Meatloaf

🥣 Variations

  • Spicy Meatballs - Add red pepper flakes or a dash of chili oil for a little heat.
  • Stuffed Meatballs - Place a small cube of mozzarella in the center of each meatball before cooking for a gooey surprise.
  • Saucy Finish - After air frying, simmer the meatballs briefly in tomato sauce for extra flavor and moisture.
  • Mini Meatballs - Make smaller bite-sized versions for appetizers or kids' meals.
  • Low-Carb Option - Skip the breadcrumbs and use almond flour or grated zucchini to keep them keto-friendly.

🍽 Serving Suggestions

  • Toss with spaghetti and tomato sauce for a classic dinner.
  • Serve as appetizers with toothpicks and warm marinara for dipping.
  • Add to a hoagie roll with cheese for the perfect meatball sub.
  • Pair with sautéed greens or a simple salad for a lighter meal.
  • Serve over polenta, mashed potatoes, or in a grain bowl.

❄️ Storage & Reheating

Fridge: Store cooked meatballs in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
Freezer: Freeze raw or cooked meatballs in a single layer on a tray. Once frozen, transfer to a freezer bag. Store for up to 3 months.

Reheating: Reheat in the air fryer at 160°C/325°F for a few minutes, or in the microwave with a splash of sauce or water to prevent drying.

💭 Recipe FAQs

Can I cook frozen meatballs in the air fryer?

Yes! Cook them straight from frozen at 180°C/360°F for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway.

How do I know when meatballs are done?

Use a meat thermometer-internal temperature should reach 74°C/165°F. Or cut one open to check for doneness.

Do I need to preheat the air fryer?

It's not essential, but preheating helps give a better sear and even cooking.

⭐ Top tip

Let the meatball mixture rest for 5-10 minutes before rolling. This allows the breadcrumbs to absorb the moisture, making the meatballs easier to shape and helping them stay juicy after cooking.
