🧾 Ingredients

garlic butter pasta ingredients
  • Pasta - Any pasta works, but tagliatelle, fettuccine, spaghetti, or linguine hold the sauce well.
  • Unsalted Butter - Provides a rich, creamy texture without excess salt.
  • Garlic - Fresh garlic will give the best flavor, but pre-minced garlic works in a pinch.
  • Parmesan Cheese - Use freshly grated parmesan for the best melt and texture. Check out also this guide on How to Store Parmesan Cheese.
  • Salt and Pepper - Enhances the flavors of the dish.

See the recipe card for quantities.

🍳 Substitutions

If you don't have all the ingredients, here are some great swaps:

  • Garlic: Garlic powder can replace fresh garlic in a pinch (use 1 teaspoon).
  • Pasta: Try whole wheat, gluten-free, or low-carb pasta for dietary needs.
  • Butter: Use olive oil if you want a lighter version.
  • Parmesan: Romano or Pecorino cheese can be used for a sharper flavor.

🥣 Variations

This garlic butter pasta can be customized in several ways:

  • Chicken Garlic Parmesan Pasta: Add grilled or pan-seared chicken for extra protein.
  • Garlic Butter Shrimp Pasta: Sauté shrimp in garlic butter and toss it with the pasta.
  • Vegetable Boost: Add spinach, mushrooms, or sun-dried tomatoes for extra nutrients.
  • Garlic Butter Alfredo: Mix in a little cream cheese or extra heavy cream for a more decadent dish.
  • Lemon Garlic Butter Pasta: Add fresh lemon juice and zest for a fresh, zesty kick.
  • Roasted Garlic: Use this Roasted Garlic Butter for a more intense and flavorful pasta.

🍽 Serving Suggestions

This garlic butter sauce for pasta pairs well with a variety of sides. Serve it with a crisp green salad, garlic bread, or Ciambotta (Italian Ratatouille) for a well-rounded meal. You can also top it with grilled chicken, shrimp, or even crispy bacon for extra texture and flavor.

❄️ Storage & Reheating

Storing:

  • Fridge: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
  • Freezer: While pasta doesn't always freeze well, you can freeze the garlic butter parmesan pasta sauce separately for up to 2 months.

Reheating:

  • Stovetop: Reheat over low heat with a splash of milk or butter to bring back the creaminess.
  • Microwave: Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring in between to prevent drying out.

💭 Recipe FAQs

Can I make this dish gluten-free?

Yes! Use gluten-free pasta and check that your parmesan cheese is gluten-free.

What's the best pasta for this recipe?

Fettuccine, spaghetti, and linguine work best since they hold the creamy garlic butter and parmesan sauce well.

Can I use pre-grated parmesan cheese?

It's best to use freshly grated parmesan because pre-grated versions contain anti-caking agents that prevent melting smoothly.

⭐ Top tip

For the best flavor, use roasted garlic butter instead of raw garlic. Roasting garlic enhances its sweetness and gives the garlic butter parmesan pasta a deeper, richer taste.
