Whether you're hosting a dinner party, planning a holiday gathering, or looking for a simple yet sophisticated snack, these crostini are a must-try. The combination of creamy goat cheese, and salty prosciutto, makes each bite irresistible. Served on crispy slices of baguette, they're the ideal balance of creamy, crunchy, salty, and sweet-perfect for pairing with wine or cocktails.

Best of all, this recipe is easy to customize and requires minimal cooking. It's all about layering great ingredients. The crostini can be made ahead of time and assembled just before serving, making your life easier when entertaining, like these Mushroom Goat Cheese Crostini or these Mushroom Pâté Crostini.

🧾 Ingredients

Here's what you'll need to make about 20 crostini:

  • French baguette - Choose a fresh, crusty baguette or an Italian rustic loaf. Slice it thinly on a diagonal for the perfect base.
  • Goat cheese - Soft and tangy, goat cheese adds a creamy texture that pairs beautifully with salty prosciutto. You can also try herbed goat cheese for extra flavor.
  • Prosciutto - Thinly sliced prosciutto adds a rich, salty punch. You'll use about half a slice per crostini.
  • Fresh basil or arugula (for garnish, optional) - Fresh herbs or a few peppery greens add color and contrast. Basil adds an aromatic note, while arugula gives a spicy edge.

See the recipe card for quantities.

🍳 Substitutions

Don't have all the ingredients? Here are some easy swaps:

  • Baguette → Use ciabatta, sourdough, or any rustic loaf. Gluten-free baguette also works.
  • Goat cheese → Try ricotta, cream cheese, or a whipped feta for a different flavor profile.
  • Prosciutto → Substitute with serrano ham, speck, or even crispy pancetta or bacon.
  • Fresh basil/arugula → Try thyme leaves, chives, or even microgreens for a different finish.

🥣 Variations

Want to mix it up? Try one of these delicious twists:

  • Goat Cheese and Pear Crostini - Add a thin slice of ripe pear before topping with prosciutto.
  • Prosciutto and Melon Crostini - Layer small cubes of cantaloupe under the prosciutto for a summery bite.
  • Hot Honey Crostini - Drizzle with spicy honey or add a pinch of chili flakes on top.
  • Caramelized Onion Crostini - Spread a thin layer of caramelized onions under the goat cheese for a savory boost.
  • Nutty Crostini - Sprinkle chopped toasted walnuts or pistachios on top for extra crunch and richness.

🍽 Serving Suggestions

Serve these crostini warm or at room temperature as a beautiful appetizer platter. They pair wonderfully with sparkling wine, rosé, or light reds like Pinot Noir. Add them to a cheese board, antipasto spread, or holiday buffet. For a more filling option, serve alongside a salad with balsamic vinaigrette or a warm bowl of soup. These crostini also make a great brunch addition!

❄️ Storage & Reheating

You can prepare the components ahead of time. Store toasted bread slices in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days. The goat cheese mixture (if mixed with herbs or honey) can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days. Assembled crostini should be eaten fresh, but you can refrigerate leftovers in a sealed container for up to 1 day. The bread may soften slightly.

💭 Recipe FAQs

Can I make these crostini ahead of time?

Yes! You can toast the bread and store it in an airtight container up to 2 days in advance. Spread with goat cheese and assemble just before serving for best texture.

Can I use another type of cheese instead of goat cheese?

Absolutely. Ricotta, whipped feta, or cream cheese are great alternatives. Choose something soft and spreadable.

Are these crostini served hot or cold?

They can be served warm (shortly after toasting and assembling) or at room temperature. Either way, they're delicious!

⭐ Top tip

Use room temperature goat cheese for easy spreading and smoother texture. Cold goat cheese can be crumbly, making it harder to layer evenly on your crostini.
