🧾 Ingredients

ingredients to make puff pastry mini pizzas
  • Puff Pastry: I prefer to use all-butter puff pastry sheets as they have a richer flavor. You can use either fresh or frozen puff pastry.
  • Tomato sauce: You can either buy jarred pizza sauce from the grocery store or make your own with simple tomato passata, olive oil, salt, and oregano (optional). See this guide on the perfect pizza sauce.
  • Mozzarella: I prefer to use a fresh Mozzarella ball, but you can also use grated Mozzarella cheese.

See the recipe card for quantities.

🍳 Substitutions

When it comes to making Puff Pastry Christmas Tree Pizza Bites, there are a few substitutions and variations that can be made to suit your preferences. Here are some suggestions:

  • Puff Pastry: If you don't have puff pastry on hand, you can use crescent roll dough instead. It won't be as flaky, but it will still work.
  • Tomato Sauce: Instead of tomato sauce, you can use pesto or alfredo sauce for a different flavor profile.
  • Cheese: You can use any type of cheese that melts well, such as cheddar, gouda, or provolone.

🥣 Variations

Here are some pizza flavor variations you can try on your mini pizzas:

  • BBQ Chicken: Instead of using tomato sauce, use BBQ sauce and top with cooked chicken and red onions.
  • Hawaiian: Use ham and pineapple as toppings for a tropical twist.
  • Veggie: Top with bell pepper cubes, onion, and mushrooms for a mini veggie pizza bite.
  • Buffalo Chicken: Use buffalo sauce instead of tomato sauce and top with cooked chicken and blue cheese.
  • Bacon: Use sour cream instead of tomato sauce and top with crispy bacon and onions. Delicious!

🔪 Equipment

You don't need a lot of equipment to make this easy pizza bites recipe.

  • Baking Sheet (Cookie Sheet)
  • Reusable baking sheet liners
  • Christmas Tree cookie cutters

❄️ Storage & Reheating

If you plan on serving your Christmas Trees Mini Pizzas within a day or two of making them, you can simply store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Be sure to let them cool completely before storing them to avoid any condensation that could make them soggy.

If you need to store them for a longer period of time, you can freeze them in a freezer-safe container or freezer bag for up to 3 months.

When it comes time to reheat your frozen pizza bites, simply place them on a baking sheet and bake them in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 5-10 minutes, or until they are heated through and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

💭 Recipe FAQs

Can puff pastry Christmas tree pizza bites be made ahead of time?

Yes, puff pastry Christmas tree pizza bites can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator or freezer until ready to bake. Simply assemble the pizza bites as directed, cover them with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When ready to bake, remove from the refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before baking as directed.

How can you make puff pastry Christmas tree pizza bites more festive?

To make puff pastry Christmas tree pizza bites more festive, you can use toppings in holiday colors, such as red and green bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, and fresh basil. You can also use cookie cutters to cut the puff pastry into different holiday shapes, such as stars or snowflakes. Finally, you can add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes or a drizzle of balsamic glaze for a touch of holiday flavor.

⭐ Top tips

  • Make sure the puff pastry is thawed properly before use. Leaving it in the fridge overnight is the best way to thaw it evenly. If you're in a hurry, you can also thaw it at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
  • If you use fresh puff pastry, take it out of the fridge, wait 5 minutes then unroll it and cut out the tree shapes immediately. If it gets too warm, it will be difficult to move the cut-out pieces.
  • To save time, you can also make the Christmas tree mini pizzas in advance and freeze them (only if you're using fresh dough). Simply assemble the bites, freeze them on a baking sheet, and then transfer them to a freezer bag. When you're ready to bake them, simply add a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
  • Bake them on the lower rack of the oven so the puff pastry can cook through and the toppings don't overcook.
